1. Introduction and welcome 

Welcome to the Educational Leadership, Management and Policy Discipline in the School of Education. In keeping with the vision of our University, we are committed to research driven teaching and learning. Accordingly, we have structured this module in a manner that integrates theory, research and practice. This approach allows you as students to drive the learning process through critical integration of your own work experiences and theoretical perspectives.

2. Focus of the module

This module exposes students to critical engagements with educational leadership, management and policy issues. It also engages with discourses around theoretical and methodological issues within the context of transforming South Africa and in the African continent in general.

The purposes of this module are:

  • To expose students to theoretical and methodological perspectives related to the study of educational leadership, management and policy.

  • To promote in students a critical and analytical reflection on these perspectives in relation to their own practice and that of their organisations.

  • To enable students to engage with discourses around theoretical and methodological issues within the context of transforming South Africa and in parts of the African continent in general.

  • To introduce the student to research-driven knowledge production in the field of Educational Leadership, Management and Policy.

    3. Module Outcomes

    This module seeks to achieve the following outcomes:

  • A sound knowledge base and a critical understanding of education in general and of Educational Leadership Management and Policy in particular.

  • Skills and understanding to critically analyse and evaluate knowledge in Educational Leadership, Management and Policy and to contribute to systematic and disciplined thinking about educational matters and issues.

  • The ability to conduct independent inquiry in Educational Leadership, Management and Policy and to report research findings in academically appropriate ways.

  • The potential to act as academic leaders and experts in the field of education.
