This is the first module of three modules of the Biological Science core Teaching Methods of the FET Phase of the programme. This module focuses on developing teachers’ specialist knowledge about teaching a school subject, knowing and understanding the school subject curriculum, assessing learners and communicating with them in nuanced ways relative to the subject content, the nature of learners and the diversity of the teaching and learning context.  The students develop to become subject specialists, mediators of learning, interpreters and designers of learning programmes and assessors of learning.

The aim of this module is to familiarise students with learning theories relevant to the discipline, as well as the school life sciences curriculum with special reference to the specific aims of the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) curriculum. Furthermore, the module will focus on the development of skills, including the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), related to teaching the content topics covered in Biological Science Education content modules of the CAPS curriculum.
